Celebrate the NLCA's 40th year on Sunday 5th June 2016

By Sara Bragg, North Laine resident

The Big Lunch was started by the Eden Project in 2009 and aims to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually on the first Sunday in June, in a “simple act of community, friendship and fun”. See http://www.thebiglunch.com.

Do it again this year?

Last year I reported on the lovely impromptu street party Tidy Street held on the Big Lunch Sunday. It made me wonder whether it would be a fitting celebration of the NLCA’s 40th anniversary if as many North Laine streets as wanted participated in this year’s Big Lunch on Sunday June 5th?

Informal and spontaneous

The idea of the Big Lunch is to be informal and spontaneous – so organizing it could be as simple as posting an invitation through your neighbours’ doors and putting chairs and tables out on the pavement on the day. Or you could apply to the Council for a street closure order and have a full street party. (This needs to be done at least 4 weeks in advance. Contact the Highways Team on 01273 293366 and for the form see https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/sites/brighton-hove.gov.uk/files/Street%20Party%20Application%20Form.pdf).

Tidy Street will definitely be doing it

The date coincides with one of Tidy Street’s own regular street closure orders (for its ‘play’ or ‘sociable’ streets), so I hope my neighbours reading this will put the date in their diaries! Why not try it in your street? Or come round to ours!
