Cutting from The Argus about 'Resident' in Kensington Gardens

Independent music retailer in Kensington Gardens

By Jackie Fuller, North Laine resident

The ‘Resident’ independent music retailer in Kensington Gardens was featured in The Argus during April 2015.  Derry Watkins and Natasha Youngs, husband-and-wife co-founders, celebrated a decade in business in 2014 despite having struggled to compete with music downloads and online shopping.

Recent vinyl revival

There has recently been a vinyl revival, but the chain stores have been slow to adapt to this. Natasha said that a small business can react quickly to changes in the market. “We don’t have to have board meetings, write project plans or go through approval processes to make things happen.”

Several North Laine music retailers stocked vinyl releases during Record Store Day

During Record Store Day in April 2015, now in its eighth year, nine stores in Sussex including ‘Resident’ in Kensington Gardens,  ‘One Stop Records’ in Sydney Street, and ‘Rarekind Records’ in Trafalgar Street joined together to stock a selection of vinyl releases. These limited releases included songs by chart heavyweights Mumford & Sons and Foo Fighters.

Support for independent businesses

Natasha added “One of the huge benefits of living here has always been the incredible support for local, independent businesses. A small business can flourish here among other small, like-minded independent businesses. So many big chains are run from head offices that are completely out of touch with the day-to-day reality and demands of their shops.”
