AGM report on Commemorative Plaques Panel, 2009/10

By Gabrielle Villermet, NLCA representative on Commemorative Plaques Panel

The Commemorative Plaques Panel meets three or four times a year to consider recommendations for ‘blue plaques’ in Brighton & Hove. At present we have a very long list of suggestions but our budget is small.

Two plaques in North Laine

North Laine has therefore been privileged to have two plaques installed so far. The plaque to Anita Roddick was installed in 2008. During 2009 a plaque to Peggy Ramsay was unveiled by Simon Callow in Kensington Place.

One in Western Road

A plaque was also unveiled in Western Road by the Greek Ambassador to Admiral Codrington, hero of the Battle of Navarino.

Still in the pipeline

All of these were supported by public subscription. Still in the pipeline is a bronze plaque to Tom Sayers, the famous boxer. This will be erected somewhere near to where he lived (in Orange Row), probably in or around North Road.

New suggestions welcomed

New suggestions are always welcome, especially if funding is offered.
