Held at Brighthelm Community Centre, North Road

1.    Attendance 

The meeting was attended by 28 people (mostly members).

2.    Apologies

3.    Minutes of the 2008 AGM

Minutes were received and accepted.

4.    Adoption of Officers' reports

a)    Chair: Peter Crowhurst - proposed by Jackie Fuller and seconded by Bobby Cheesman

b)   Joint Secretaries: Lynne Arnold, Helen Cornish and Gay Phillips -proposed by Kevin Daly and seconded by Sandy Crowhurst

c)    Treasurer: Clifford Jacques - proposed by Roy Skam and seconded by Margaret Daly

All reports were adopted nem con.

5.    Adoption of Coordinators’ reports

a)      Planning and Environment

b)      Licensing

c)      Newsletter

d)      Website

e)      Theatre Group

f)       Parents Network

All reports were considered together and all were adopted nem con.  Adoption proposed by Kevin Daly and seconded by Ruth Goodall.

6.    Adoption of reports from NLCA representatives on other groups

a)      Brighton Society

b)      Living Streets

c)      City in Bloom

d)      Community and Voluntary Sector Forum

e)      Commemorative Plaques

All reports were considered together and all were adopted nem con.  Adoption proposed by Margaret Daly and seconded by Sarah Dunsmure.

7.    Election of Officers

a)    Chair: Peter Crowhurst proposed by Jackie Fuller and seconded by Roy Skam.  Elected unanimously.

b)   Secretaries:  General Secretary – Helen Cornish; Minutes Secretary – Lynne Arnold; Meetings Secretary – Gay Phillips, proposed by Bobby Cheesman and seconded by Sarah Dunsmure.  Elected unanimously.

c)    Treasurer: Clifford Jacques proposed by Ruth Goodall and seconded by Henry Bruce.  Elected unanimously.

8.    Ratification of Coordinators for the coming year (as they appeared on the inside back cover of the North Laine Runner, No 197, March/April 2009)

Proposed by Kevin Daly, seconded by Margaret Daly and ratified unanimously.

9.    Ratification of NLCA representatives on other groups (as on inside back cover of the North Laine Runner, No 197, March/April 2009)

Proposed by Bobbie Cheesman, seconded by Valerie Kippax and ratified unanimously. 

10. Ratification of Street Representatives for the coming year (as on inside back cover of the North Laine Runner, No 197, March/April 2009)

Proposed by Barry Leigh and seconded by Sandy Crowhurst.  Maureen Brand agreed to cover Robert Street.  There is a need for someone who lives in Blenheim Place flats to take on this role for the flats.

11. Any Other Business

a)    Maureen Brand proposed Gabrielle Villermet as an Associate Member of the NLCA in recognition of the years of active support she had given to the Association, particularly on planning issues. In addition she was still representing the Association on City in Bloom and on the Commemorative Plaques group.  Sarah Dunsmure seconded this proposal and it was unanimously approved.

b)   Brighton is the launch site of the Heritage Weekend in September and the North Laiine will be the focus for Brighton.  We need more residents who are willing and able to allow small groups to see our historic homes.  Contact Peter Crowhurst if you are interested.

c)    What enforcement is being executed since the ATM on Trafalgar Street was refused retrospective planning approval and then lost the appeal, and yet is still in place?

d)   The public enquiry regarding the old Royal Alex demolition and rebuild proposals will start on 12 May 2009.

e)   Kevin Daly proposed a formal vote of thanks to the Officers and Coordinators and all other active members of the NLCA; this was seconded by Ruth Goodall.

12. Speaker

The meeting was then addressed by Robert Hill-Snook on ‘The Gardens at the Royal Pavilion and the forthcoming Gardens Week’.
